As more electric vehicles reach the end of their lives, EV scrapping is becoming an increasingly common question. The short answer: scrapping an EV follows the same basic process as a petrol or diesel car, but the battery is the wildcard that can significantly affect value — in both directions.
Key difference: A working EV battery pack may be worth more as a second-life energy storage unit than as recycled material. A degraded or dead battery can add costs to the scrapping process. Specialist EV ATFs are emerging to handle this properly.
How EV scrap value is calculated
Like any car, the base scrap value of an EV starts with its weight in steel and aluminium. EVs are generally heavier than equivalent petrol cars due to the battery pack — a Tesla Model 3 weighs around 1,850kg versus 1,350kg for a comparable petrol saloon. This means the base metal price is higher.
However, EV-specific factors push the value up or down:
- Battery state of health: A battery retaining 70%+ of original capacity has second-life value for energy storage — dealers may pay a premium
- Battery brand and size: Large Tesla packs, Nissan Leaf batteries and similar are in demand for re-use
- Battery condition: A swollen, leaking or fire-damaged battery adds disposal costs — the dealer may deduct this from your quote
- Electric motor and inverter: Remanufactured EV drivetrain components are growing in value as the second-hand EV parts market matures

Do you need a specialist EV scrap dealer?
Not all ATFs are equipped to safely handle lithium-ion battery packs. Working with a specialist EV recycler ensures:
- Safe high-voltage disconnection of the battery
- Proper classification of the battery (re-use vs. recycling)
- Compliant disposal of hazardous materials
- Maximum recovery value — specialist dealers typically pay more
When getting quotes, ask specifically whether the dealer handles EVs and whether they assess the battery for second-life value separately.
What about hybrid cars?
Mild and full hybrids (Toyota Prius, Honda Jazz Hybrid, etc.) are scrapped much like regular cars. The hybrid battery adds some value, and — as noted in our catalytic converter guide — hybrid cats are worth significantly more than petrol equivalents due to higher PGM loading.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) sit between the two: the larger battery has second-life potential, and the catalytic converter is valuable too.
