Who are the dealers on Scrap Car Check?
Every dealer on our platform is a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) registered with the Environment Agency. ATFs are the only businesses legally permitted to issue a Certificate of Destruction when a car is scrapped. Using an unlicensed dealer means you may still be liable for the vehicle even after it has been collected.
Is there any cost to use Scrap Car Check?
No. The service is completely free to use. We are paid a referral fee by the dealer when a deal is completed, which comes from their margin, not from you.
What happens after I accept a quote?
Once you accept a quote, the dealer will contact you to arrange a collection time. Most dealers can collect within 24 to 48 hours. They will bring the relevant paperwork, including the Certificate of Destruction. You should remove all your personal belongings from the car before collection.
After collection, the dealer will notify the DVLA that the vehicle has been destroyed. You can also do this yourself via GOV.UK using your V5C logbook. Any remaining vehicle tax will be automatically refunded to the registered keeper by the DVLA.
How will I be paid?
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, all payments for scrap metal must be made by bank transfer or cheque. Cash payment is illegal. Legitimate ATFs will pay you by bank transfer, usually on the day of collection or the next working day.
What if I don't have my logbook (V5C)?
You can still scrap your car without a V5C. However, you should inform the DVLA that you no longer own the vehicle. You can do this via GOV.UK even without the V5C reference number. The ATF can still issue a Certificate of Destruction and notify the DVLA on your behalf.
